Yesterday we popped round the corner to a very welcoming Ernest Wright & Son. They have been manufacturing scissors for over one hundred years! We were introduced to Ian and Clive both with 50 odd years of experience in manufacturing scissors and blades. They had a very clear passion for the engineering and craftsmanship. It was incredible to see the attention to detail and potential complications they highlighted to us when designing such a simple product.
Heres a few pics from our visit.
Above the photo shows drop forged scissors that have been hardened. They harden the blades and not the handles so that they can be bent into shape to create a good cutting edge and allow the handles to meet. Below the photo shows the finished product with enamelled handles.
The machine below gave them a final polished finish by rumbling the scissor blades and handles around in an acid wash with porcelain beads and then washed down with water. This process averaged around 8 hours for each of the washes.
Thanks to Philip, Cliff and Ian!
