We’ve redesigned the pendant slightly making it a little bit smaller and named it ‘Ull’ which translated from norwegian means wool. Heres a few shots of the new design, we’ve wired ours up with a contrasting braided cable from Urban Cottage Industries

The facilities available included metal injection moulding machines used to create small complex components, an electron beam welding machine used to weld thick sections of materials with high precision and the impressive additive manufacturing facilities which currently produce titanium parts for use in F1, aerospace and in the medical field.

Current medical uses include hip replacement parts and this titanium lower-jaw which was successfully implanted last year. Read more here.

Additive manufacturing is the process of solidifying powdered particles in fine layers, to build complex structures without the cost of expensive tooling. Impossible parts can be ‘grown’ and material usage can be reduced whilst still retaining overall strength and rigidity. The video below explains the process in more detail.

The Leeds Met Design department has a buzzing community of young designers looking to develop their skills alongside a concern for sustainability through design, which is key to anyone in the design profession.
